Ar y 25ain o Ebrill 1866, pan oedd sylfaenydd Gwasg Gomer, John David Lewis yn 7 oed, ysgrifennodd yn ei ddyddiadur:
\n\u201cDechreuodd fy nhad gadw siop ar ei liwt ei hun o\u2019i gartref, Y Llew Coch, gyferbyn \u00e2\u2019r Prif D\u0177.\u201d<\/p>\n

Roedd y busnes yn llewyrchus a llwyddiannus a symudwyd i adeilad fwy o faint yn sgil hynny. Bu J.D. Lewis yn helpu rhedeg y siop wrth iddo dyfu, ac fe fagodd hynny gariad oes tuag at lyfrau a darllen. Mae\u2019r dyfyniad hwn gan Gibbon yn un o\u2019i lyfrau nodiadau: \u201cMae cael blas ar lyfrau yn rhoi pleser ac anrhydedd mwyaf fy mywyd i mi. Ni fyddwn yn ei gyfnewid am holl gyfoeth yr India.\u201d<\/p>\n

Felly, pan fu ei dad farw yn 1889, nid yw\u2019n syndod y dechreuodd J.D. Lewis gadw stoc o lyfrau ymysg y bwydydd, nwyddau haearn, brethyn a grawn yn y \u201cMarket Stores\u201d. Datblygodd ei freuddwyd o sefydlu gwasg argraffu hefyd.<\/p>\n

Prynodd ei beiriant argraffu cyntaf yn Aberhonddu yn 1892. Gan nad oedd yn gwybod dim am y broses argraffu bryd hynny, fe hysbysebodd am argraffydd a phenodwyd dyn pedair ar bymtheg oed a oedd wedi bwrw\u2019i brentisiaeth yn Sir F\u00f4n. Profodd hyn i fod yn sylfaen cadarn ar gyfer llwyddiant y busnes. Roedd W.J. Jones, neu Jones Y Printer, fel y daethpwyd i\u2019w adnabod, yn grefftwr medrus ac yn athro a wasanaethodd y cwmni yn ffyddlon. Parhaodd yn weithgar dros ben am ddegawdau gan weithio fel cysodydd hyd ychydig fisoedd cyn ei farwolaeth yn 1955, ac yntau\u2019n 82 oed.<\/p>\n

Dewiswyd yr enw Gwasg Gomerian bron yn sicr yn sgil y parch mawr oedd gan J.D. Lewis tuag at y Parch. Joseph Harris (1773-1825), a oedd yn dwyn yr enw Beiblaidd Gomer fel ei enw barddol.<\/p>\n

Cyhoeddwyd y llyfr cyntaf, Hanes Plwyf Llandysul yn 1894. Roedd hon yn gyfrol o 350 tudalen, a rhaid oedd gosod pob tudalen, fesul llythyren \u00e2 llaw, gyda thua 2000 o ddarnau o deip ar bob tudalen. Gyrrwyd y wasg gan y gweithredydd a chofnodwyd mewn llythyr i\u2019r awdur; \u201cFy mhris am argraffu 1500 o gop\u00efau o Hanes Plwyf Llandysul a\u2019u pacio yn barod ar gyfer y rhwymwyr fydd \u00a353\u201d (tua \u00a33500 yn arian heddiw).<\/p>\n

Mae yna gofnod dyddiadur o 1901 yn dangos y parodrwydd i fuddsoddi sydd wedi nodweddu Gwasg Gomer byth ers hynny; \u201c\u201cFix oil engine in shed outside house, spindle from shed underneath road to present kitchen, furniture etc. being removed to small kitchen. Double Crown [peiriant argraffu] to be removed from present position to kitchen. Sell Demy folio [peiriant argraffu llai o faint] and get a Treadle instead\u2026\u201d<\/p>\n

Awgryma\u2019r cofnodion i\u2019r busnes dyfu\u2019n gyflym ar ddechrau\u2019r 20fed ganrif ac roedd marwolaeth annisgwyl J.D. Lewis o gyflwr y gellir ei drin yn gymharol hawdd heddiw yn ergyd drom i\u2019r teulu yn ogystal \u00e2\u2019r gymuned ehangach. Gadawodd pedwar mab ar \u00f4l, a syrthiodd y dasg o ofalu am y busnes ar ysgwyddau\u2019r hynaf, David Lewis. Y datblygiad arwyddocaol nesaf oedd prynu peirianwaith cysodi a oedd yn cael ei weithredu\u2019n fecanyddol \u2013 a gwnaethpwyd hynny pan oedd dirwasgiad 1926 ar ei anterth. Mae\u2019r ffaith iddynt ddewis y system Monotype yn hytrach na\u2019r Linotype a ddefnyddiwyd gan bapurau newydd yn cadarnhau bod ansawdd yr atgynhyrchu yn hollbwysig yn eu meddyliau. Bu\u2019r penderfyniad craff hwn yn allweddol i\u2019r cwmni tan ddyfodiad yr offer cyfrifiadurol ar ddechrau\u2019r 1970au. Prynwyd y peirianwaith argraffu mwyaf modern hefyd yn ystod y 1930au ac roedd y silindr Wharfdale yn gyfrifol am argraffu llyfrau i rai o gyhoeddwyr mwyaf blaenllaw Cymru.<\/p>\n

Hyd at 1945, roedd Gwasg Gomer yn gwmni argraffu yn unig, ond newidiodd pethau pan brynwyd Gwasg Aberystwyth yn ystod y flwyddyn honno, ac mae ochr gyhoeddi’r busnes yn dal i fynd o nerth i nerth hyd heddiw.<\/p>\n

Yn 2004, symudodd y busnes o\u2019i gartref ers 112 o flynyddoedd i safle newydd pwrpasol a adeiladwyd ar gyrion Llandysul er mwyn parhau i ehangu a datblygu. Heddiw mae\u2019r ffatri hwn yn cynnwys gwasg berffeithio Heidelberg XL106 yn ogystal \u00e2 chyfleusterau cyfrifiadur i bl\u00e2t a\u2019r cyfleusterau rhwymo diweddaraf . Mae cariad J.D. Lewis at lyfrau ac argraffu a ysbrydolodd ef yn y lle cyntaf yn dal yn gryf ym mhedwaredd genhedlaeth y teulu sydd yn awr yn rhedeg y busnes.
